    Know Your Rights Cards

    rights card for aboriginal and torres strait islander peoples The KNOW YOUR RIGHTS card for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples briefly outlines your right to fair treatment under the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991. It is credit card size and made of tough laminated material.

    There is no charge for KNOW YOUR RIGHTS cards and you can place an order by calling 1300 130 670 or TTY 1300 130 680 (state wide) or using the Order Form.

    The Mabo Oration

    The Mabo Oration is a bi-annual event organised by the Anti-Discrimination Commission Queensland. It celebrates and pays tribute to the work of Eddie Mabo, who achieved High Court recognition of the occupation of Australia prior to white settlement.

    The inaugual Mabo Oration was held on 3 June 2005 at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre in Brisbane and was given by Noel Pearson. The 2007 Oration was delivered on 15 June 2007 by Professor Larissa Behrendt.

    Tracking Your Rights

    Tracking Your Rights was originally produced as part of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Education Project. The aim was to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to use anti-discrimination laws to bring about improvements in social justice for community members.

    The Queensland version is a social justice package to inform Indigenous Queenslanders about their rights and is currenly being updated, with all the latest information.

    Reaching out to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples everywhere in Queensland is a full colour poster 23 cm x 44.5 cm featuring a painting by Aboriginal artist Colleen Wall titled 'Walking Together for our Future'.

    This booklet includes questions and answers about refugees, migrants and Indigenous people and is available from the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission website.


    Resources for managers

    Employers' Toolkit

    An inclusive workplace is one where the human rights principles of fairness, respect, equality and dignity are promoted and are part of the organisation’s everyday goals and behaviour.

    The material contained in this kit will assist employers to set out their organisation’s commitment to tackle discrimination and sexual harassment and promote equality and diversity in areas such as recruitment, training and management. These are important steps on the way to creating an inclusive workplace.

       

    CD-ROM training package

    Fairness - everyone’s business is the complete 'ready to go' package for anti-discrimination training in Queensland. It includes a CD-ROM, PowerPoint slides, trainer’s notes, visual scenarios, handouts and activities, cases, glossary, legislation and tips for trainers.

    The cost of Fairness - everyone’s business package is $535 (including GST) OR
    $750 (including GST) for the package PLUS a full day’s training in how to use it.

    Audio visual resources

    To order audio visual resources please use the Publications Order form and indicate preferred format.

    Conciliation dvd/video

    Working it through is a six minute video explaining how conciliation conferences are run at the Commission. It is useful for complainants, respondents, legal representatives and others who may attend a conciliation conference as a friend or support person. There is no charge for this item.

    A choice of formats is available including : VHS, DVD and CD-ROM. All formats have Supertext.

    ‘Fair Go’ dvd/ video

    ‘Fair Go’ : a guide to anti-discrimination legislation in Queensland is a ten minute video which uses case studies and dramatised examples to explain unlawful discrimination. It is a useful introduction to the legislation for employers, employees, students and for general interest.

    DVD as well as VHS format (both with SuperText) are available. The video may be purchased from the Commission at a cost of $11 (includes GST).

    Audio cassettes

    Three popular brochures have been produced in audio cassette format and are available for loan. The Information Brochures page gives more information .

    Reports

    Women in Prison report

    On International Women’s Day 2006, Women in prison was released. It is the result of a major review conducted by Commission staff to 'research and consult on the treatment of women in Queensland prisons on the basis of gender, race and disability.'

    Treat Me Fairly report

    This report focuses on ways to improve access to complaint processes for culturally and linguistically diverse people. The project was a partnership between Multicultural Development Association, the Anti-Discrimination Commission Queensland and the Health Rights Commission Queensland.

    A Treat Me Fairly CD is available in the following languages : Dari, Farsi. Amharic, Tigrinian, Somali, Coatian, Arabic, Mandarin, Spanish, Vietnames and English. Each CD contains:

    • information about how to help someone with a complaint (in English)
    • information in another language (eg Dari) about what is considered unfair treatment, examples of unfair treatment and what you can do about it.
