Workplace discrimination prevalent in Central Queensland

The Anti-Discrimination Commission Queensland’s Annual Report which was tabled in Parliament yesterday shows that workplace discrimination makes up 76% of complaints lodged with ADCQ in Central Region. This is an increase of almost 9% on last year’s figures.

Overall, the number of complaints lodged with ADCQ in Rockhampton has increased. While impairment complaints have decreased slightly this financial year, it remains the highest ground of complaint and equal to the number of sexual harassment complaints.

Complaints in the area of accommodation have risen significantly this year, to 7%, up from 2.5% last year. Goods and services complaints have also increased slightly from 10% to 12.7%.

The increase in complaint numbers in Central Queensland coincides with an increased ADCQ presence in that region. 'The Rockhampton team has been very pro-active with their community engagement activities this year' said Anti-Discrimination Commissioner Kevin Cocks. 'When people know about their rights they are more likely to exercise them.'

As part of the community engagement strategy, training sessions in Central Queensland increased from 30 to 47 this year. ADCQ staff also hosted an information and family fun day for the Rockhampton Afghanistani and Sri Lankan Tamil communities. Participation in the Excellence in Action disability awards in Rockhampton and Gladstone was a further demonstration of ADCQ’s commitment to recognising the achievements of vulnerable groups.
